A lot of us in the LGBTQ community recite what his tombstone says every time a gay serviceman is honourably discharged, but later dies (for whatever reason), at that person grave.

Makes me cry as well! It shouldn't happen!

Okay, this one brought tears to my eyes. BTW, I cannot upgrade to paid. I am 68 y/o living on a fixed income and working a part-time job to pay for food. I did treat myself to Volume I, though. And I love reading your lessons every day. Thanks!

I've had the privilege of seeing Kameny speak. He was a lion; uncompromising, fierce, proud of himself and all of us. His level of self-possession, and his complete lack of acceptance of shame, must have scared the bigots shitless.

On a related note, I hope you have the time to look into and report about Jim Toy, a similarly brave gay activist from Michigan. He's one of the main reasons the Episcopal church came along as quickly as it has on LGBT rights, and he founded what if IIRC was the first college LGBT center, at UofM. He did a lot more as well. We lost him last year, and he is profoundly missed.

Very sad indeed. I choose to look the bravery of someone who made a difference in the lives of so many. Thank you for telling his story.

Some stuff in America’s history is embarrassing. And some of it makes me so sad & angry. Thanks for writing about all of it.
