I'm a Northern California native, and we learned about the Donner Party in school... it was age-appropriate but you try telling a bunch of fourth-graders to not make cannibal jokes.
I live in Sacramento and my family lives in in northern Nevada, so I make the I-80 drive at least once a month. In the winter, it's an absolute mess - I can't imagine it 150+ years ago.
First time I was at the park I remember a woman standing next to me looking up at the trees cut off many feet over her head (snow was that deep back then) and she says " I wonder why they climbed up so high to cut off the tree?" ... no words
