I can't watch any movie where the dog/cat suffers. Blow people up - OK. The dog hurts their leg - I can't function.

It was an amazing feat by the drivers and the dogs, Togo especially. It reflects badly on humans that we tend to focus on the final leg in any relay.

Mr. Fell, I admire your dedication to fitness. I wish I had any, myself. I get the idea of winter events — hardy northerners are celebrating their resilience. Among those events, though? There's sometimes a fine line between challenging and punishing.

Polar Bear clubs seem silly to me, running into near-freezing water to splash around as they do. However, they stay only a moment, then celebrate in warm buildings with hot drinks. Shorter-course sled races, lotsa fun for mushers and pooches.

Trying to understand endurance events, on the other hand, breaks my brain. Even with emergency support teams ready to respond, running 10K in that kind of cold is hazardous. I can only imagine that your garb was a compromise between protection and mobility. Considering the possibilities for frostbite, injuries on slick spots, or overheating because of poor clothing choice, the whole thing strikes me as — well, fucking nuts.

Thanks for your stories. After following you on Facebook, bought the new edition of THIS DAY and will be dipping into it soon. It strikes me as good reading for the john, with its capsule entries.

Balto and his friends got to live out their days and be taken care of at the Cleveland Zoo, and eventually his body was preserved by a taxidermist. He is still at the Cleveland museum of Natural History. We've seen him on a field trip with one of my kids.

Taxidermy weirds me out, but I love the story.

That film with Willem Dafoe (a great screen actor) is excellent.
