Surgery Tale, Part IV
Still not quite right
This post is for paid subscribers
Final installment. We left things in Part III with the trip to Mexico and having to take a bunch of antibiotics because of a post op infection. After the return from Mexico, I was three weeks post-surgery, and I wasn’t supposed to do any exercise for a month other than light walking. And so, after a month I tried a modest weightlifting work out. Afterward, I had abdomen pain for the rest of the day and into the next. So, I decided to take another week. Repeat for another fucking month. My down time from the surgery was actually two months, because exercise just hurt too much, probably because of the infection. After the two months I could slowly and gently start working out again, but I frequently had that abdomen ache that would last for hours afterward. Slowly, it was diminishing. Really fucking slowly.
I almost never wore underwear for about a year.
Anything that put pressure on my abdomen made it sore, and having the benefit of working from home, I got very familiar with my loosest sweatpants, going commando. It was the only thing that was comfortable. It didn’t help that I’d put on weight from not being able to exercise, and all my underwear was a little on the snug side. Not that snug though, and I’m not sure going out to buy all new pairs would have made much difference.
In Part I talked about running a half marathon in Banff being the day everything started to go to shit. To inspire myself to get back into shape, I registered again for the late September race.
