Feliz Navidad, pendejos. That’s a pic from my recent trip to Mexico, but I’m home now in the Calgary snow and if you want to brave the weather we can hang out this Tuesday night.
I’m doing something I’ve never done before on Tuesday, which is a public reading of my work in a bookstore. I’ve done a lot of public speaking, and a few book signings, but I’ve never done a reading; this is a new experience for me.
I’m going to quote from a crappy war movie (25% on Rotten Tomatoes) called Flight of the Intruder. There is a scene where the pilot of an A-6 Intruder is instructing his new weapons officer about ejecting from the aircraft. I don’t remember shit about the movie except for this conversation:
Pilot: “The command will be ‘eject, eject, eject.’ Three times, you got it?”
Weapons officer: “Yes, ‘eject, eject, eject.’ Do I say roger or ... just do it or what?”
Pilot: “You even say ‘huh’ and you’ll be talking to yourself, ‘cause I'll be gone.”
I bring that up because I enjoy talking to myself. I think it might be an ADHD thing. Sometimes, it’s how I process stuff. When I get busted doing it and someone says the fuck are you doing I will sometimes say, “Just talking to the smartest person in the room.” Except that’s a fucking lie because my wife, both our kids, and my best friend are all smarter than I am.
Anyway, I’m doing this reading on Tuesday and it’s one time that I would really prefer to not be talking to myself. In other words, if you can make it, please come. It will suck if no one comes. Or maybe a bunch of people will come and it will be crammed because the bookstore isn’t that big. That would be fine with me.
It is at Owl’s Nest Books in Calgary, this Tuesday night, December 12, at 7pm.
The address is 815A – 49th Avenue SW.
I’ll be reading stuff that’s never been published, talking about a new book I’m working on, doing a Q & A, and signing copies of On This Day in History Sh!t Went Down. I’m even going to dress nice. Also, I could be talked into going for a beer afterward.
But if you can’t make it, you can listen to me talk on this podcast. It’s a unique interview with a popular podcast called Running for Real. I mean, they’ve interviewed Malcolm Gladwell and a bunch of other famous runners. And now they have interviewed me.
We talk about writing, and running, and a bunch of other shit. I get pretty vulnerable in it; the interview took place the day before my recent surgery. Even if you’re not a runner, I think it contains some stuff you may be interested in.
This link has a description of the interview along with some quotes to see if you want to invest the hour, as well as links to listen on your preferred platform should you decide yeah I could listen to this.
And if you haven’t yet, don’t forget to get On This Day in History Sh!t Went Down. Makes for an awesome gift and there is still time to buy a bunch of them.
