I’m Canadian and I’ll Still Travel to Mexico Instead of the U.S.
I'm already planning my next trip
When I, as a Canadian, proclaim that I refuse to travel to the U.S., I get the same response from all Americans:
Good. Don’t.
Depending on who is responding, the reasoning behind their reply is wholly different.
Those who despise Trump are concerned for my safety if I do visit the U.S. and they also support me boycotting their country because they know Tangerine Palpatine keeps threatening my nation’s sovereignty.
The Trumpanzees, however, are all “No one fuckin’ wants ya here anyway ya commie canuck hrrrrr enjoy yer soshalizm hrrr.” I expect a few minutes later they blew off their big toe practicing Johnny Ringo quick draws in case someone breaks into their house to steal their 47” Sanyo flat screen.
I flew home from Puerto Vallarta on Saturday, right before shit went down. We still have family there sheltering in their hotel. So are the staff, who can’t go home right now. As of writing, no civilians or tourists have been harmed. It’s a battle between government forces and cartels. There is a lot of misinformation, as well as ai images showing fake destruction. There is some real destruction, but the entire city isn’t burning, and it seems things may be returning to a sense of normalcy.
Many fans of the Manchurian Cantaloupe wrongly assert I’ve only ever been to a Mexican resort and proclaim I don’t know what the “real” Mexico is like. And yet, I’ve spent several months traveling through non-resort Mexico, studying both history and Spanish. I drove a VW microbus full of university students through downtown Mexico City and through rural areas alike. My master’s degree was in Latin American history. I’ve ridden the chicken bus all over Guatemala and rode a motorcycle through that country while it was in the midst of a civil war. I even encountered some guerillas on my travels. I spent a month in Guayaquil, Ecuador and explored much of the city on foot.
And I never once felt unsafe. Well, one time in the middle of the night in a Mexico City bus station there were some guys high on glue that kept hassling me for money. I never gave them any and they never got violent. They were just annoying.
I have, however, felt unsafe a few times while visiting the U.S. Drunken assholes in Milwaukee. An incredibly angry cab driver seething while listening to Rush Limbaugh in Las Vegas. More drunk assholes in Buckhead, north of Atlanta, followed by a cab driver who wanted to show off his guns … In all instances it was white guys.
But that was fine. The world isn’t always a safe place. You need to keep your head wherever you go, and know where to avoid. There are safe parts of Mexico and the U.S., as well as unsafe parts. There are unsafe places in Canada as well.
My reasoning for refusing to visit the U.S. is political. At first, it was a boycott based on principle, because I refuse to visit a nation that put the Count of Mostly Crisco into power a second time. Then the Danger Yam took office and rapidly began transforming America into a police state and I became fearful. Hell, he made that fascist fucknut Dan Bongino the Number 2 at the FBI. Dan, who once attacked me personally on his Nazi podcast and sicced his minions on me. For all I know, I’m on a fucking list.
Mexico wants me to visit. I am respectful and I tip well. They want me to come spend money and I’m happy to do it because I love the country, its culture, and its people. And the food is amazing.
I’ve written a history book that sold close to a hundred thousand copies, most of them in the U.S., and said book is most unkind to the orange occupant of the White House. The U.S. doesn’t want me there. Plenty of Americans who say Canada should become the 51ststate make rude jokes to Canadians, but even worse is that the government has made it clear that my kind isn’t welcome. Fine.
Mexican authorities aren’t asking to search my phone, go through my social media, or ask my opinion of their president before letting me in. The Mexican president isn’t threatening to take over my country. Law abiding tourists aren’t getting thrown into detention centers in Mexico. Mexico is not waging economic warfare against my country. Conversely, many legal visitors to the U.S. have had horrible experiences being detained while having broken no laws. I won’t risk being one of them.
Yes, cartels are a threat, but it’s one that visitors can usually avoid with some caution. For Canadians in the U.S., the threat is from ICE, and they are fucking everywhere. They’re trigger happy, and they (for now) have immunity to act with impunity to do whatever the fuck they want.
Fuck that.
I’m a big fan of the band Rush. When they announced a new tour, I was excited to go but couldn’t make the Toronto dates due to a previous commitment. There were five U.S. dates, and also a Mexico City date. I got tickets to see them in Mexico, and I have no regrets about that decision.
It’s going to be an awesome show. I can’t wait.

Those who cannot remember the past need a history teacher who says “fuck” a lot. Get both volumes of ON THIS DAY IN HISTORY SH!T WENT DOWN.

Straight shootin: I as an American cannot blame you. I eventually want to plan on moving elsewhere (perhaps somewhere in the EU or even Canada) because of how much damage the orange pustule has done to the US. We will not be in good standing with the rest of the world until im old and gray (i just turned 35) or perhaps dead, unless we can fast track it by swamping the GOP into near irrelevance for at least a decade.
I'm one of those people for number one. My country has dangerous lunatics in charge and running amok, and I don't want you to get hurt. I'm probably on a list too. Enjoy visiting Mexico! The pictures are lovely.
