There’s a scene in Band of Brothers Episode 9, where Easy Company discovers a concentration camp in Germany near a town with unrepentant locals who swear they didn’t know and it wasn’t their fault. Despite supplying the camp with food and the cloud of ashes falling from the sky. This reminds me of that. The smug, hateful look on the face of one woman in particular, which changes when she’s tasked to clean up the bodies. Bullshit you didn’t know, you hateful bigot.
There’s people all over the world who have smugly stood by while their neighbours are persecuted, raped and murdered. They could be active participants, egging them on from the sidelines, or just standing by and not stopping it - it’s all a choice they make. Pretending they didn’t know is a disgraceful hypocrisy.
The only way to make amends is to genuinely repent and atone. I remember reading about a US Neo-Nazi who went to jail and whilst in there, came to genuinely feel remorse for his actions. When he came out, he had his tattoos removed, and he works in community and schools to educate others about the abhorrent things he had done.
A local (Melbourne, Australia) as yet unrepentant neo-nazi has just been sentenced to holocaust education and shadowing a rabbi for a period of community service. I feel sorry for the rabbi but hope this can affect genuine change.
I know we are supposed to offer an olive branch to those who are potentially leaving from being MAGGATS. But a “I am sorry. I apologize.” doesn’t even begin to say she will be doing anything other than a lip service regret. No actions she will take to counteract what she helped put into place.
