@John Boyd. Sylacauga is known for its Marble. Quite a supply. Lots of the residents have kidney stones because of the minerals in the water supply, affected by the Sylacauga Marble beds. 🙂
Sylacauga= Sill -ah-COG-ah. The meteor fell into the tiny Town of Oak Grove, unincorporated at the time. There were two parts to the meteor that day. The other landed in the road and Mr McKinney, pulling a cart with a mule, had to stop to move the rock out of his path because the Mule wouldn't go around it. When he saw all the fuss happening at the Hodges house, he went back and got it and used it as a door stop before selling it to the Smithsonian.
I remember this as a kid. In the glorious days of teevee, think Queen For A Day, mention of this would send us into peals of laughter. We loved the idea of someone in the middle of nowhere getting whacked by a rock. It's still oddly amusing.
Correction: Ann Hodges used the rock as a door stop when she finally got it back from the Air Force. Mr McKinney hid his part in a closet or under the bed because he was afraid the Air Force would come take it,like they had Mrs. Hodge's
It was 1954. Would that have made Ms. Hodges the first rock star?
Dad, staaaahp! 😅

Thanks for the morning laugh.
Man, those last two lines hit hard. They ground the fact that history is about real people no different from you and me.

So, the nearly fatal space rock caused her to have deadly kidney stones?
